2023-2024 SMNW PTSA Executive Board

SMNW PTSA is a member of the Shawnee Mission Area Council PTA, a charter unit of Kansas PTA, and member of National PTA.

The National PTA is the largest and oldest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States. A not-for-profit association of parents, educators, students, and other citizens active in their schools and communities, PTA is a leader in parent involvement and reminding our nation of its obligations to children.

We are:

  • Strong advocates for Public Education,

  • A vital resource for families, and

  • A powerful voice for children.

All officers and board members, whether national, state or local unit, are volunteers. All members speak with a unified voice on behalf of all children, as highlighted by the PTA tagline: Every Child, One Voice.

Our school PTA (local unit) is a self-governing unit, chartered by Kansas PTA and part of National PTA. Local units are governed by the bylaws of our organization, set forth by Kansas PTA, and may not act in any manner inconsistent with Kansas PTA and National PTA. Local units elect our own officers and control our own local budget. Our local unit is a PTSA, which refers to middle/high schools that recognize students as members. National PTA and all of its constituent PTAs exist to fulfill the PTA Mission and Purposes. We are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

The PTA Purposes are to:

  • Promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship;

  • Raise the standards of home life;

  • Secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth;

  • Bring into closer relation the home and the school that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth; and

  • Develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.

The PTA Mission is to:

  • Support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools and before governmental agencies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children;

  • Assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; and

  • Encourage parent and public involvement in the schools of this nation.
